Overview
We are physicians first!
After completing medical school, students who choose the specialty of psychiatry have several options. Most students go directly into a Categorical Psychiatry residency program. These are four years in length and typically include approximately two years of inpatient rotations and two years of outpatient/elective rotations.
Some students are so enamored with the interplay between medicine and the mind that they choose to combine psychiatry training with another specialty. There are far fewer options in these combined programs but successful completion leads to boarding in multiple specialties. Currently there are double board programs that combine psychiatry with either Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, or Neurology. The Triple Board Programs combine Pediatrics, Adult Psychiatry and Child Psychiatry. All combined programs are 5 years in length.
At UC we offer the following residency programs:
- Categorical Psychiatry
- Family Medicine & Psychiatry
- Pediatrics, Child/Adolescent and Adult Psychiatry
